About
Anthony Hill, M.A.
UKCP Clinical Psychotherapist
Approach
There are many different approaches to psychotherapy and counselling. I focus on developing an open, trusting relationship with you as I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most important vehicle for change. At the heart of my practice is a commitment to provide you with a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space in which we can explore the issues most important to you. I work collaboratively and adapt how I work to be most effective for the problems you bring. This aligns with the latest research on how psychotherapy and counselling work most effectively.
I am confident that the approaches to therapy that I offer — Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) and Integrative Psychotherapy — can help with most psychological issues you may bring. If I can’t help you, then I will usually be able to recommend someone who probably can.
The first session is free. It is an opportunity to ask questions and find out more. The next step is to book an assessment.
Experience
I have been working as a psychotherapist for 15 years and have experience treating a diverse range of issues, including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, self-esteem, abuse (sexual, physical and emotional), trauma, grief, loss, work/career issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, sexual issues, gender and identity, bullying, self-harm, suicidal feelings, and isolation. This list is not exhaustive, and I am willing and can usually work with whatever is troubling you.
In addition to running a private practice, I have experience working with a local counselling charity in Hampshire and a counselling service in Dorset.
Areas of Special Interest
I am particularly interested in attachment processes, the way we form emotional bonds with others. Attachment theory suggests that the types of relationships that our caregivers provide for us during our early years can set the stage for how we relate to others throughout our adult lives. Our attachment styles, formed in childhood, although often largely unconscious, can sometimes become an obstacle to experiencing fulfilling, sustainable relationships with others in the present.

Speak to Your G.P.
Before deciding to come for therapy privately, remember that you can also speak to your GP about what counselling and psychotherapy services may be available free of charge in your area. Alternatively, your workplace, university, college, or a voluntary/charitable organisation may also be able to help.
Shop Around
I would also like to encourage you to meet with one or two other counsellors and psychotherapists. You can compare our styles and approaches and, most importantly, notice how you feel when you are in a session with us. It's crucial to feel you have made a good choice.
